What is Ethics Coaching? Part II

In What is Ethics Coaching? Part I we defined “ethics”. Now, let’s talk about what we mean by “coaching”, what is it, and what it looks like.

Or perhaps we should start with what ethics coaching isn’t.

It is not Therapy
While customers named one of our offerings “Entrepreneur Therapy”, coaching is not a mental health service. It is not intended nor equipped to heal or unpack emotional injury or trauma. While coaching conversation may involve bringing up the past and acknowledging trauma, it is done with the intention of evoking actionable awareness of how it may support or block who you currently are and who you are becoming.

Consulting
Coaching can powerfully support you in identifying strategies and action plans. However, your ethics coach will not provide you with answers.Consultants leverage and apply their domain expertise in your specific context to identify and recommend solutions. The focus of coaching is on who you are or would like to be. The world's leading expert on being you is, well, you. Coaching helps you tap into that expertise to drive results in your own unique context. The good news? Unlike consulting, when the coaching relationship concludes, the expert sticks around for the implementation and beyond.

Mentorship
A mentor, like a coach, is focused on the future you. Unlike a coach, a mentor, at least in some aspects, is the future you. A mentor shares insights, wisdom, and inspiration from further down the path you are on. In a coaching relationship, you bring the insights, wisdom, and inspiration. Rather than providing you with those, a coach partners with you to uncover your own.

Friends and Family
Indeed, no partnership compares in depth and commitment to close friends and/or family (pre-assigned or chosen). What makes the care a coach provides powerful is, in fact, the opposite: detachment. Your coach does not have a horse in the game, which allows them to focus exclusively on you. For the same reasons, they can notice and reflect what may be invisible from up close.

What coaching is
Coaching is solution-focused and action-oriented. It supports you in tapping into your inner wisdom to drive these actions and solutions with authenticity and integrity. It is a space to examine your core values and belief systems and evaluate what is— or isn’t—serving you. You will uncover what you really want and what may be holding you back, and design step-by-step action plans and accountability measures for achieving your goals.

Ethics coaching helps you reimagine, communicate, and proactively shape healthy, fair, and sustainable ways of being in business. It helps you clear obstacles and build the clarity, confidence, community, and cash to realize your vision.

What is your vision for a fair, sustainable, and fulfilling path to prosperity?

If there was a practical way to make your vision a reality, how interested would you be in exploring it?

Last Friday marked one year of activity for the Lawrenceville Shut Up & Write writing group I co-host. I am using this special occasion to start a new routine: sharing my writing. You likely spent days and months wondering, “Why am I not getting any of them promised Ethics Nuggets I signed up for?” Well, that is about to change, thanks to this four-syllable, one-hour-a-week habit I picked up a year ago.I used to write for a living, in Hebrew. When I found myself in New York City, called to...

What is Ethics Coaching?Glad you asked! To answer that, let’s start by defining “ethics.”While there are many definitions, for the purpose of our work, we define ethics as values in action. To describe values, we use the phrase “This I Believe.”Ethics, in a phrase, is “This We Practice.”Ethics coaching supports the journey from “This I Believe” to “This We Practice”: from belief to practice AND from I to WE. We see ethics as a social contract. To put it together:Ethics is a social contract based...

Have you ever been blindsided by things not going your way? Doing everything in alignment with your values, in flow with it all, flying high and fast - into a brick wall? That happened to me when I ran for a seat on the board of Zebras Unite. There were two of us competing. The vote was decisive. It wasn’t even close. I had no idea how emotionally crushing the defeat would be. Rather than shrugging it off (“huh, this sucks”) and moving on, shortly after receiving the news I was walking my...
